Does asking for 'monkey's blood' on my ice-cream make me racist?

A friend of mine was recently berated by an ice-cream man for requesting 'monkey's blood' on his 99. 'That's offensive now, mate', he was told, 'you have to call it raspberry sauce'. There were no monkeys within earshot at the time, so who exactly was likely to get upset? I could understand if he'd been in Hartlepool at the time, where the locals are endearingly referred to as Monkeys.

Hartlepool is famous for allegedly executing a monkey during the Napoleonic Wars. According to legend, fishermen from Hartlepool watched a French warship founder off the coast, and the only survivor was a monkey, which was dressed in French military uniform, presumably to amuse the officers on the ship. The unsophisticated fishermen assumed that this must be what Frenchmen looked like, and after a brief trial, summarily executed the monkey. (ref: Wikipedia)
I'm more a chocolate sauce and chopped nuts kinda girl myself, but I remember the days of being sent out into the street, with a Tupperware bowl and 50p, to buy the family's pudding from Mr Softee. Sometimes my dad would tell me to ask for a squirt of 'beetle's blood' . Given that I had ( and still have) an aversion to all things anthropodic and haematologic, this ensured that he got my share of the ice-cream. He used to use a similar trick on my gullible young cousin, telling her that the raisins in McVities Shorties, were in fact dead flies. Oh, and the old 'Butterscotch Angel Delight contains curry powder' line was always a favourite. No wonder I was a faddy eater.

Anyway, back to the red sauce. To call it raspberry would, I feel, breach the Misrepresentation Act. That sticky stream of chemicals has probably never seen a soft fruit. Crushed up beetle bits is closer to the mark. Or so I thought until today................

Cochineal, the red food additive, is derived from insects although not from the shiny black beetles I had imagined:
the stuff we call cochineal is a chemical extract of carminic acid from the bodies of squished female scale insects.
The fact that they are 'scales' and therefore legless creatures, makes them slightly more palatable However, as the blood isn't technically from beetles, we are now left with one less name for the nation's favourite ice-cream topping.

Any suggestions?

  1. A bit of a correction... Hartlepudlians known as Monkey HANGERS. There's a big difference.

Anyway, I, as you probably guessed, am from Hartlepool, and we also call the raspberry goop Monkey Blood, or at least did the last time I bought an ice cream approx. 20 years ago. I was speaking to someone from Scotland a few minutes ago, who had never heard of the phrase.

I also struggle to find the racial "slur" given by that name.

Despite it being the middle of February, there's an icey van that stops at the end of my road every day. I might ask for a cornet with some monkey blood and see what the result is!

  2. Thanks for your comment. My Dad also corrected me on the ommission of the 'Hanger' part of the Hartlepudlian nickname. I thought 'Monkey' sounded cuter and altogether less threatening!

How have you managed to resist the tinny tinkle of the ice-cream van's bell for so long? Don't eat your first one too quickly - nothing worse than brain freeze.

  3. I'm from North Yorkshire and have never heard of "monkey's blood" before. On Sunday I bought an icecream from a kiosk in Sunderland and the girl in the shop asked if I wanted monkey's blood on it. After looking puzzled she giggled and explained that she meant strawberry sauce. I'm sure it must be a regional expression as none of my colleagues from Yorkshire had heard of it before.

  5. Our lass is from Scarborough and has never heard it called Monkey's Blood. She always referred to it as red sauce, as a Mackem I have always called it M/B and will continue to do so until they prise the cone from my cold dead hand.

  6. I was just down in the kitchen now trying to find some raspberry ice cream, when I realised that it had never occurred to me whether monkey's blood was exclusive to Hartlepool or whether it was used all down the nation.
I really have only just made the connection between monkey's blood and the legend having lived in Hartlepool for most of my 15 years. Oh, the shame.

I have not long had lunch in the dinning facility on COB Spiecher (an American base near Tikrit in Iraq) walking out you can pull yourself a Mr Whippy icecream - I turned to my Welsh buddy and said "all it is missing is some Monkeys Blood" - he looked at me very strange - so I explianed its the red sauce think they put on!!! what else could it be???

  11. My Grandad always used to call it monkey's blood too, he lived in Aycliffe but grew up in Newfield (both south Durham). Strange that the phrase didn't cross the border into Yorkshire!

  13. Always has and always will be called Monkey's Blood. An ice cream isn't the same without it. The PC people should be ashamed if they think they are offending monkeys. Not as if we're licking a monkeys arse on our ice cream is it..just their blood HaHa..

  18. Its odd that some of the Yorkshire respondenst have never heard of Monkey's Blood, there was an ice-cream man from Scarborough on the Chris Evan's Show this morning and he called the raspberry sause Monkey's Blood! I am from North Liverpool and we all called it that as kids and I was just e-mailing Chris about whether the expression went as far east as Warrington when the Scarborough chap mentioned it. Cannot get much further east than that!

  74. My old man grew up in Walker, Newcastle. He says when he was growing up in the 1960's, the red sauce was referred to as 'Darky's blood'. I'm guessing the ice cream man was also referring to this when he said it was racist

  75. I was brought up on Ice Creams from Jaconelli's Cafe in Maryhill Road and we always asked for Tally's Blood

    ReplyDelete
  76. The person who disputed the existence of the phrase in Glasgow is probably young and therefore never experienced the old Glasgow with its many Italian cafes, each known as the local 'Tally' or 'Tally's'. It may be considered racist now but for us it was just a shortened version of 'Italian' and was not used with any malice. (During wartime it may have been different.) On the racist theme, I find it odd that its ok to say 'Khazaki' for example but not 'Paki'. I am a Scot, hello to all Engs!
